Exploring Matanzas City, & Varadero Beach Resort Town

Matanzas is the capital of the province with its same name. During the XIX century, Matanzas was the cultural capital of Cuba, home of very important writers, poets, politicians and musicians. At the same time, Matanzas’s province was one of the biggest producers of sugarcane, therefore, the province had some of the biggest concentration of slaves in the country. African culture is present in many aspects of the local culture, but above all, the massive following of Santeria defines the identity of this city.

The excursion starts with a stop at San Pedro the Apostle Catholic Church, located in Versailles neighborhood and known for its beautiful neoclassical style architecture. After, guests continue with a walking tour around the Historic City Centre for approximately 2 hours, where customers will appreciate historic buildings like San Carlos Borromeo Cathedral and the Sauto Theater, both architectural symbols of the city. Guests also explore Narváez Riverwalk where many local shops, artist studios and bars can be found.

The second part of the excursion happens in Varadero Beach Resort Town, approximately one hour from Matanzas City. Once there, customers explore this lovely beach town, with opportunities to purchase souvenirs and enjoy local food.

  • San Pedro the Apostle Catholic Church: Located in Versailles neighborhood, the Church was completed in 1870 by the same architect and visual artist in charge of the construction of Sauto Theater: Daniel Dall Aglio.
  • Sauto Theater: National Monument. One of the most renowned theaters in Cuba, recognized by locals as a symbol of the city for its architectural splendor and the relevant artists who have performed on its stage.
  • Narvaez Riverwalk: One of local’s favorite areas to spend time with family and friends. It is known for its rustic street art and small shops and bars.
  • San Carlos Borromeo Cathedral: It was the Parish Church of the city of Matanzas. In it, the records of baptisms, marriages and deaths of local important political, influential artists and clergy from Matanzas are preserved.
  • Varadero Beach: Certainly, Cuba’s most famous beach and one of the most beautiful in the world. A coast line of beautiful white sands and clear and warm waters that extends for approximately 13 miles. The town with the same name is packed with resorts and it is considered one of Cuba’s most visited destinations.
